HMRC logoSenior content designer | HMRC (contract) | May 2022 to Dec 2023

Working within a multidisciplinary team to completely overhaul the legacy Excise Movement and Control System (EMCS) service.

Spent Discovery auditing the existing service and wrote a detailed research brief to set out the team’s strategy for engaging with end users throughout the lifecycle of the project. Remained with the project through public Beta, delivering on-page content design, supporting the interaction designers with prototyping, and leading on the external comms strategy in partnership with the business.

Developed a new type of design documentation (a detailed form of copydecking) that was adopted by a number of other internal teams.

HMRC logoContent designer | HMRC (contract) | Apr 2021 to Aug 2021

Working within the multidisciplinary gForms team to provide content design consultancy for 4 months before I went on maternity leave.

gForms is an established team working on multiple projects to deliver against HMRC’s commitment to digitising existing paper processes. My role was to provide design oversight to what were largely technical processes, ensuring that the needs of the user were translated from paper to digital, and that design and accessibility standards were upheld at each stage.

As the team uses the Postman API platform, I committed to learning that software so content design could be delivered as an independent function.

Zaizi logoLead content designer | Zaizi (contract) | Aug 2020 to Mar 2021

Working as a content designer on one government project, then as a lead content designer across 2 successful bid proposals and another project as a result of one of those bids.

The initial project involved producing content and creative elements for a government campaign, to drive user engagement with a piece of key policy. This involved designing and prototyping different designs, taking them through user research, and working with stakeholders to ensure they met the project ambition.

The second project, the bid for which I was involved as a consultant, involved designing and producing a quantity of GOV.UK guidance in advance of the rollout of a new policy. This meant careful investigation of appropriate content types, regular consultation with key policy and design stakeholders, and end-user testing.

Defra logoLead content designer | Defra (contract) | Oct 2018 to Aug 2020

Initially contracted as a content designer to work on the Future Farming Programme’s flagship ELM service, I was shortly afterwards promoted to lead and assumed responsibility for content design across the programme.

In the lead role I had significant engagement with policy and business-side stakeholders, collaborating across a number of different delivery workstreams to ensure consistency of design and deliverables. My key goal was to drive the uptake of content design and associated best practice by one particular stakeholder group with significant short and long-term targets for content creation and publication. I set strategic goals for delivery, recruited and managed a team of content designers to work alongside delivery partners, ran a series of content workshops, and maintained my involvement in the day-to-day delivery of individual work packages.
